Think this shit’s funny?

Keep making rape jokes then.

It really gets me when people say things like “why didn’t you report them!?” or “it’s your fault, you let them walk free”. Statistically speaking, rapists will not be convicted, or tried or even brought in for questioning. The victim is lucky if their charges even get a second glance. Plus, the horrific things victims have to go through to prove that they’ve actually been victimized further damages their psyche and healing process, which should be their first priority above anything. It’s the sad reality we live in and rapists know this and it’s why they continue to be so prevalent. In addition, we live in a victim-blaming society where rape is considered a preventable situation in which a person can’t suppress their innate sexual urges instead of a violent, horrific crime. By saying things like “she was asking for it” or “they shouldn’t have been so drunk” suggests rape is something everyone is capable of if they’re tempted enough, which it most certainly is not.

These numbers need to change. This is embarrassing and disgusting, but we as a society, need to start rethinking how we even perceive rape before that can happen.

trigger warning: rape, victim-blaming

In Sacramento, a county judge has taken “victim-blaming” to a whole new level, ordering that a rape victim be jailed while awaiting the trial of her rapist.

The 17-year-old had failed to appear for two previous court dates to testify against Frank William Rackley, 37, who is accused of abducting and raping her and is believed to be a serial rapist. Judge Lawrence Brown claimed to be “terribly sorry” about the position the young woman is in, but his sympathy didn’t stop him from ordering that she remain in a juvenile detention center until April 23, Rackley’s next trial date.

Rape trials are notoriously traumatic for victims; frequently, the attempts to discredit a rape victim’s credibility and character leads her to feel that she is actually the one on trial. Victims’ fear of further violations they will receive at the hands of the justice system—from inappropriate and irrelevant questions about their sexual histories to accusations that they are simply lying—is undoubtedly one of the many reasons why rape is already one of the most underreported crimes, with only 46 percent reported to police and only a small fraction of those ultimately going to trial. And it is highly likely that fear is precisely what prevented this young victim from showing up for two previous court dates. But rather than striving to create an environment in which she could testify comfortably and safely, Judge Brown decided to take punitive action against her instead.

An effective way to make women to continue afraid to report rape and testify against their abusers.

So, you’re going to imprison her & increase her risk of being re-assaulted & add to her trauma just in case a jury actually convicts even though you’ve just handed his lawyers a perfect way to refute her testimony by saying it was coerced & thus untrustworthy and that’s before we get into the incredibly low conviction rates for rape even without the way she’s been treated…I need to go outside. BECAUSE THIS IS WHY WE DON’T REPORT IT! The system will hurt a victim just as much (if not more) as the assailant.

Disgusting. This is why women have to treat men like every one is a potential rapist. Because a patriarchal justice system puts US on trial for being victims, and is willing to imprison us in the name of “justice.” Ugh. -Jess

I have no faith in our justice system when it comes to matters of rape. I was 6 years old when my mom was raped while the scumbag who did it pointed a gun at me and my brother. But we were never questioned about it and the case against the guy was thrown out because the defense got my father to act as a character witness against my mom.

We spent almost 15 years moving around as the same scumbag stalked us around the country. Finally, he sent a letter to my mom, telling her that he finally found her and was coming to rape her again and then kill her this time. Thankfully, the police took the threat seriously and he was caught.

So is it any wonder that, when I was raped, I didn’t report it? After all, I was married to the asshole who raped me, so who would believe me? Even my “friends” didn’t believe it was possible for a husband to rape his wife.

I have no faith in our justice system when it comes to matters of rape.

Wow, OK. I could have done without ever seeing that letter again. Why the fuck did I save it? Probably for evidence that it happened.

[TRIGGER WARNING: Rape] Fat women are treated as utterly undesirable in our culture [and] are often turned into a ‘bizarre’ fetish object. The result is that fat women are told to be grateful for any sexual attention they receive from anyone, whether they themselves find that person sexually appealing or not. In other words, even more than your average women, fat women are only allowed to be occasional objects of desire and are regularly denied their right to have and pursue sexual desires of their own.

That way of thinking becomes very dangerous when sexual violence is mixed in. When fat women are raped, they’re often told they should be grateful that anyone wanted them, or, alternatively, disbelieved because it doesn’t seem plausible that anyone would want them ‘enough to rape them.’ These arguments not only rely on the dangerous myth that rape is about uncontrollable sexual desire (it’s not), but also propagate the message that fat women’s bodies aren’t valuable enough to the culture for their violation to be taken seriously.

Hey all

My friend is trying to get signatures for a petition against Judge David Farrell. Recently, he sentenced 2 men to 40 months in prison for raping an 11-year old. Why was the sentence so light? Because she looked older than her ask and was “willing”, despite the fact that she claimed it was rape. Please reblog as far as the eye can see and sign this petition to voice your opinion that this is unacceptable!!

SIGN THE PETITION HERE!

Ugh. Disgusting. Please sign and reblog.

[trigger warning - child abuse, rape] I feel no sympathy for Joe Paterno. I feel nothing for him at all. He died at 85 years old, and for the majority of his life he was at the top of the world- a hero, a saint, an icon. A rich and powerful man, in a position of power at a rich and powerful institution, that just so happened to allow countless children to be brutalized in order to maintain it’s precious reputation and the money and power that went along with it. And he was complicit in that, no matter how much pretzel logic you use to try to excuse it away. At the very least, he was a moral coward, at worst he was a knowing enabler of the torture of children. Maybe he did have regrets, and maybe he was genuinely remorseful, but whatever personal hell he dealt with in his final months doesn’t even come close to what the children who were victimized experienced, and they are still living with it every day.

[…]

But I’m one of the lucky ones. I am unlike the millions of kids who never escape from the cycle of psychological torture and self inflicted violence- the kids and adult survivors who kill themselves, either directly or indirectly. The ones who never make it out ok.

And when they die, they don’t get photo layouts, or tributes. They are faceless. They are nameless. They are forgotten.

If you are going to grieve for anyone, grieve for them. Not Joe Paterno.

This excellent, excellent article here. Heavy trigger warnings for deep survivor shit. But so good.

Read this, JoePa fans. Read every word. Then read it again. Memorize it. Every time you’re tempted to jump to Joe Paterno’s defense against a survivor, remind yourself of this article. Form a pavlovian response so that you do this automatically.

Proceed to never, ever say a word about Joe Paterno again.
